Data mesh: A decentralized approach for cross-domain data analysis

Over the past two decades, data management systems have typically been monolithic and centralized. Managing these large-scale data hubs has made it increasingly difficult to produce timely business insights. As analytical data continues to evolve and is consumed more rapidly, understanding the “time to insight” has become crucial for data-driven organizations seeking to effectively serve their business stakeholders.

Reimagining data architecture: The data mesh revolution

While centralized data hubs may be appropriate for simpler domains with limited consumption use cases, they often fail for enterprises with rich domains, many sources, and diverse sets of consumers. Key considerations in modern data architecture include domains, data sources, cataloging, consumer needs, and how organizations can explore data faster in a cost-effective manner.

In 2019, Zhamak Dehghani proposed moving away from monolithic, centralized, top-down technology solutions toward a decentralized, domain-federated architecture. This approach treats data as a readily consumable product that can be self-served by data citizens across the organization. Security and governance form the foundation of this approach.

Unlike traditional architectures where data is funneled into a single set of repositories managed by a central team, data mesh distributes data ownership across domain-specific teams. Each domain team becomes responsible for their data products, ensuring they are discoverable, accessible, addressable, secure, and usable throughout the organization.

Challenges to address

Data consumers and producers require a user experience platform to view, create, and govern their data products and assets within one or more data domains. This platform should enable consumers to explore business domains and their published data products in a consistent and secure way, with an interface that shields them from unnecessary technical complexity.

Currently, there are several initiatives and trends emerging in this space. However, no single solution provides all the benefits that consumers need. While the data mesh approach doesn’t impose specific technology boundaries, it does require a self-service platform for successful adoption of domain data products.

TCS Industry Data Mesh on Microsoft

TCS’s innovative self-service solution helps organizations manage data products easily and reduces time to insight through efficient data discoverability. Data producers can govern their own data shares without logging into multiple data governance platforms.

TCS Industry Data Mesh is a unified self-service portal that empowers both data producers and consumers with several unique features:

  • Ability to connect various data product collaboration workspaces on Microsoft cloud
  • Single unified user experience for discovering, viewing, and requesting access to any type of data products published by respective producers, leading to faster data insights and greater productivity through automation
  • Increased transparency regarding data ownership and quality to enhance trust and accelerate adoption across the enterprise data landscape
  • Tools for monitoring data product quality and getting a preview before subscribing
  • Capability to enable monetization models and track P&L for both data producers and data consumers

The TCS Industry Data Mesh solution is ideal for:

  • Organizations planning to adopt a data product journey
  • Organizations with a domain-federated or centralized data fabric vision
  • Large organizations spanning multi-cloud, multi-vendor data landscapes
  • Customers looking to build a strong AI foundation while minimizing data exploration time

Accelerating digital transformation with measurable results

Organizations can achieve up to 40% faster go-live for their data product initiatives by leveraging prebuilt solution modules such as domain automations, data quality scoring, and data product discoverability. Easy onboarding onto TCS Industry Data Mesh helps drive faster value realization.

Deep integration with Microsoft SaaS and PaaS, pre-packaged industry-aligned data products accelerate customer’s data product journey.

Enterprise-grade foundation for success

The solution is built entirely on Microsoft foundations:

  • Microsoft Purview, CosmosDB, and PowerBI form the backbone of the solution
  • It accelerates Purview adoption and maturity toward data product management
  • TCS and Microsoft partner on data mesh and data product initiatives globally
  • Both TCS and Microsoft can provide skilling programs for data mesh and data product journey

Future-proofing your data ecosystem

The data mesh approach is a key trend being adopted by many large global organizations. A unified user experience is becoming essential for accessible and reusable data products. TCS Industry Data Mesh helps customers accelerate their data mesh journey by reducing exploration efforts and improving data product quality through clear ownership and accountability information.

Access automation is also essential for increased productivity across organizations. TCS is working closely with customers to integrate the solution with their existing data product landscapes.
