When AI feels ordinary, it means we did it right

Imagine hearing about a technology that will literally change how you see the world. It promises to transform social customs. Create new industries. Remake city skylines. Would you track every development? Marvel at the possibilities? Travel to see it with your own eyes? In 1893, that’s exactly what people did — when the newly developed incandescent light bulb illuminated the Chicago World’s Fair.

But it wasn’t the flashy display of thousands of winking bulbs that transformed life as we know it. It was the longer, slower, more iterative process that followed: The construction of grids. The wiring of houses. The evolution of factory safety precautions. In other words, the electric bulb didn’t reshape the world when it shimmered and dazzled. It reshaped the world when it became ordinary.

Right now, we’re in a similar moment in the AI revolution. We have the technology, but we need the business infrastructure that will allow it to fade into the background: the grids and powerlines of the AI-powered future.

And here’s the paradox: when AI starts to feel like background noise — like electricity — it will be a sign that we’ve done the hard work of making it ordinary and if we did this responsibly, also trustworthy.

To build this infrastructure — to get to a place where using AI is no more extraordinary than flipping a light switch — we shouldn’t get caught up in the debate between the doomsayers and the utopians. Real leadership won’t come from either extreme. Instead, it will likely come from the blank space between them. This is where small problems are solved, and technological potential meets commercial impact. At a basic level, this process depends on quality and transparency, the key ingredients of trust — and the foundation of any technological revolution.

Quality matters because it’s human nature to resist changes to the status quo. Any new technology needs to be even more advanced than the most advanced option currently available. Why migrate to the cloud if it’s only as good as the system already on site? Why let a robot operate if it’s no better than a surgeon with excellent experience? We see the importance of quality when we look at changing attitudes toward autonomous vehicles: even if self-driving cars have the potential to one day be statistically safer than human drivers, a single accident can spook us for years.

People will naturally hold AI to a high standard, and rightfully so. If models make too many mistakes too early on, hesitation could harden into distrust — and trust is exceedingly difficult to win back once lost.

Why trust starts small — and scales big

This is why trust in AI isn’t built with big bets. It’s built by drawing sharp lines, solving manageable problems and making adoption feel inevitable. As business leaders roll out AI tools, they should start with the ones that can reliably perform discrete tasks and build from there. We think of this process as establishing a “trust perimeter”: a small, contained environment for experimentation and iteration. When something works, you double down, expanding the perimeter little by little.

But we also have to ask: who gets to set those trust perimeters? Who defines what “quality” looks like? If we want AI to benefit everyone, the process of earning trust needs to include diverse perspectives — from developers and regulators to frontline workers and communities most affected by the outcomes. That’s where responsible AI comes in: A set of practices designed to unlock AI’s transformative potential while addressing inherent risks. Trust isn’t just something we build for people. It’s something we build with them — by inviting, participating in and providing a playground or “sandbox” where innovation can happen by controlling the potential risk.

Transparency as the engine of trust

And what happens when something goes wrong, or we reach the limits of our current capabilities? Enter transparency. We need to be honest about what our technology can do and what it can’t. When it’s not up to a task, we need to say so. When it makes a mistake, we need to own up to it and correct it. As the Navy SEAL mantra goes, “Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.” It’s only by building trust that we can achieve long-term growth.

In PwC’s 2025 Global AI Jobs Barometer, we’re already seeing what quality and transparency can mean for AI adoption. The greatest AI productivity gains are happening in industries where AI outperforms advanced humans (think software engineering) and in highly regulated industries, where transparency is legally required (think finance, insurance and manufacturing).

History proves the paradox that setting narrow trust perimeters enables sweeping technological change. In the early days of the cloud, for example, when enthusiastic early adopters would ask if it was possible to get an exabyte of data immediately, the providers that ultimately led the industry were the ones who said, honestly and cautiously: “not yet.” Those innovators achieved progress step by step, setting achievable goals and not overpromising. Eventually, they overhauled decades of data processing and storage norms.

At PwC, we’ve seen the same in our work with clients like Wyndham Hotels and Resorts. In the past, any update to Wyndham’s brand meant manually cross-checking hundreds of standards across thousands of properties — an average of 30 days of work. Agentic AI brought that time down to just more than a day. Rather than trying to tackle isolated issues, Wyndham approached AI as a scalable strategy  —  sequencing projects to build on one another and deliver compounding value. They identified a simple procedural holdup and used AI to overcome it. From there, they’ve been able to scale AI agents widely, demonstrating their ability to build a lasting advantage through trusted AI and human expertise.

As we stare up at the steep slope of AI’s innovation curve, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement. But when we truly reach AI’s potential, it should feel like background noise — or electricity. You don’t see headlines about the latest innovations in bulb or powerline design. More than hyping or fretting about this transformative technology, we simply use it to do what used to be impossible: drive cars that don’t require gas, automate manufacturing and keep global markets online 24/7.

When powerful technologies fade into the background, they can also become harder to scrutinize or regulate. That’s why it’s critical to pair trust with accountability — to confirm we don’t lose visibility just as these tools become more embedded in everyday life.

It’s counterintuitive, but this is where we want to get with AI — not to make it fade away, but to make it so seamlessly it becomes second nature.  This kind of future won’t come from infinite novelty. It will come from regular, sustained progress — and hard-earned trust.
