Transforming the healthcare industry with AI agents

AI agents are finding their way into nearly every industry, revolutionizing the way work gets done. In generally overburdened and short-staffed sectors like healthcare, AI agents can be a long-awaited lifeline—offering workflow adjustments that reduce administrative tasks and free up time for more important care-based work. With their ability to act autonomously and make logical decisions, AI agents offer providers and payers the supplemental support they need.

Healthcare offers a clear lens into the real-world potential of agentic AI. While the full scale of impactful use cases for AI agents in healthcare has yet to be seen, it’s already clear that agentic AI is beginning to redefine the sector.

AI agents are improving efficiency and diagnostic decisions

AI agents have immense potential to improve both healthcare processes and outcomes. Today, leading sector decision makers see the top use cases for agentic AI in healthcare to be appointment scheduling (51%), diagnostic assistance (50%), and medical records processing (47%), according to a Cloudera survey report, The Future of Enterprise AI Agents.

AI agents have advanced pattern and anomaly detection tools that enable them to offer diagnostic assistance based on details that may not be obvious to the human eye. An agent trained on thousands of X-ray images, for example, might detect early signs of pneumonia or lung cancer before a human doctor alone could catch them. By highlighting where the radiologist should examine more closely, AI agents can help physicians make faster and more accurate diagnoses.

AI agents can automate repetitive tasks like processing insurance information, checking medical billing codes, and scheduling appointments to give clinicians more time to spend with patients. They can also streamline patient visits by quickly processing a patient’s medical history and delivering a summary to a healthcare professional. In this way, AI agents have the potential to improve healthcare experiences.

AI agents must account for bias

While positive use cases are the most exciting, agentic AI isn’t without risk. Fifty-one percent of organizations surveyed by Cloudera have significant concerns about AI bias and fairness—largely because AI can reinforce societal biases unintentionally when trained on historical data. The stakes and potential repercussions from these biases are particularly high in healthcare because they can influence decisions that affect people’s care, lives, and well-being.

A Yale study shared that bias in medical AI can emerge at every stage of the AI lifecycle—from data curation and model design to implementation and post-deployment use—leading to misdiagnosis and compromised care, especially for underrepresented populations. Bias is also not confined to flawed data. It can manifest in how organizations structure workflows, interpret intent, and evaluate outcomes.

To combat bias and keep people safe in an agentic AI world, it is essential that healthcare organizations train diagnostic and record systems on diverse datasets, embed lifecycle auditing, and enforce transparency and governance protocols in every model pipeline.

AI agents must be built for transparency

In a highly regulated and sensitive industry like healthcare, transparency and governance need to be built into the foundation. AI agents must be governed with strict frameworks, data location tags, regular audits, and explainability measures. That said, responsible AI is not just a governance function—it’s also a design principle. To ensure trust, healthcare organizations must prioritize data quality, ensure model robustness, and adopt well-tested decision-making practices.

Establishing accountability is a critical first step. That’s why healthcare companies must clarify: Who is responsible for an AI agent’s performance? Is it the developer who built it, the medical professional who uses it, or the operations team that oversees it? For example, if a diagnostic agent recommends a treatment protocol, someone must be accountable for verifying whether that protocol is sound. It’s meant to improve human workflows, not replace them. That’s why this layer of ownership is essential—ensuring agentic systems don’t become black boxes.

Encouragingly, 80% of organizations surveyed by Cloudera are extremely or very confident in the transparency and explainability of their AI agents’ decisions. The more healthcare companies prioritize transparency, the safer their patients, partners, and vendors will be.

In healthcare, agentic AI is poised to give organizations a competitive edge—but its value goes far deeper. It can help providers offer better care to their patients, uncover helpful insights, streamline billing processes, and improve people’s lives. When built responsibly and governed transparently, agentic AI promises a positive difference in the healthcare industry and beyond.
