Public 5G services are all the rage in carrier TV advertising, but enterprises may find a powerful alternative to local area, Wi-Fi, and edge networks in the form of Private 5G.
With high-speed operational performance and enterprise control, Private 5G has the potential to advance new connectivity capabilities across virtually any industry segment. The global Private 5G network market is growing at a compound annual growth rate of more than 40% and projected to reach USD $13.92 billion by 2028, according to a study conducted by Polaris Market Research.
During a March 24 #IDGTechtalk Twitter chat, moderated by Isaac Sacolick @nyike and sponsored by @GlobalNTT, a group of implementers, consultants, and influencers debated how Private 5G compares to other technologies and the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Ultralow latency is the #5G superpower & it will unlock a host of enterprise use cases such as tactile control of robotics & factory automation

IMO the superpower of #5G is to make the disconnected #Edge go away, and make #EdgeComputing part of the continuous business process. This will unlock #DigitalTransformation at global scale. Thinking #Agriculture too. #IDGTechTalk
Rodrigo Gazzaneo, @vGazza
Participants discussed how Private 5G differs from public carrier services and how it can impact businesses.
There are many reasons to go with private #5G vs public. It includes the need to isolate your network, to deploy in a closed facility (especially with mmWave) that public 5G can’t penetrate, ability to optimize network characteristics, the ability to gen revs, etc. #IDGTECHtalk
Jack Gold, @jckgld
Private 5G networks will be used to enable much more control and reliability internally rather than public. It will really enable much more partner win-win collaboration. #IDGTechTalk

Several viewed Private 5G as an opportunity to enhance or extend digital transformation initiatives.
Fortune-100 companies can deploy private 5G networks at major campuses to both create new 5G enabled innovations and to leverage their own employees as digital pioneers before going external #IDGTECHtalk

Combined with strengthened #edge aggregation capability at the provider partnership level AND extended range and maximum speed, the whole thing leads to a flexible ecosystem no previous generation of #mobile could enable. #IDGTechTalk

Private 5G can be delivered via licensed or unlicensed spectrum, which provides organizations with more flexibility and options between regulated or unregulated services.
When considering private 5G, my mind keeps going back to a parallel story – the delivery of Starlink services to Ukraine. Fast and no red tape. #IDGTechTalk
Steven M Prentice, @StevenPrentice
There was general agreement that Private 5G will become a standard option for business once trailblazers show the way.
More important than standard – we want to see some bold #5G bets pay off and be game-changers in large scale, important to life industries #SmartCity #Healthcare #HigherEd for example. #idgtechtalk
Isaac Sacolick, @nyike
Private 5G technology brings a baseline level of security, natively, with security protocols inherent. Still, security ultimately comes down to implementation and management.
Every technology requires new and updated security protocols. 5G is no exception. Private 5G will need more security measures at org level. Public 5G will need more security measure at the ISP level. #idgtechtalk
